Fuvahmulah: No Lagoon, No Filter, Just Big Shark Energy, Into the Blue Unknown Where Tiger Sharks Rule.
Fuvahmulah was one of those places that had me feeling excited and slightly nervous at the same time.
The dive started simple enough — gear on, backroll into the water, quick buddy check, and down we went. Nothing too dramatic.
But the moment I looked out into the blue, I knew this wasn't going to be your typical reef dive.
There's something about Fuvahmulah that feels a little wild. You're not spending the dive admiring colourful coral or watching tiny fish dart around the reef. You're staring into the deep blue, hoping to spot something, while also quietly wondering if all your life decisions have led to this exact moment.
And then the tiger sharks showed up.
Seeing them in real life is completely different from watching them on YouTube or Instagram. They move so slowly, yet somehow own the entire ocean around them. No rush, no panic, just casually cruising past like they pay the rent here.
I was trying my best to stay calm and look like an experienced diver. Internally? Different story. There was definitely some screaming happening.
The crazy part is that the fear disappears pretty quickly and gets replaced by pure awe. Before long, I couldn't stop watching them.
It was intimidating, beautiful, surreal, and somehow addictive all at the same time.
By the time we got back on the boat, I was tired, salty, and still trying to process what had just happened. Fuvahmulah isn't the kind of dive trip where you come home with just nice photos. You come back with stories, questionable GoPro footage, and that feeling of, "Did I really just do that?"
Would I do it again?
Absolutely.
